Obsession Quilting

Welcome to Obsession Quilting where you will find everything you want to know about Quilting.

Although my first love is machine embroidery, I began quilting so that I could learn something new and have a practical way to put my embroidery to use.

But after making a quilt or two I was completely sucked in. Quilting became an end in itself rather than just a process to showcase the embroidery. I love combining the two, but I also enjoy the creative effort involved in putting a quilt together.

But I have admit that I found it difficult to actually 'quilt' my finished tops using a standard sewing machine.

You can do quilting with most modern sewing machines either by using a walking foot (for stitch in the ditch etc) or by using an embroidery foot and free motion settings but they all involve moving the quilt under the needle and most machines only have a small throat or neck which can make it tricky.

Lap quilts are okay but anything larger than that and it becomes very tricky managing all that bulk in such a small space, so I started looking for an easier way to handle larger quilts.

Which lead me to machine quilting on a frame.

When you are using a frame, rather than moving the quilt under your needle, you move the machine over the quilt!

My frame allows me to use more complex quilting designs and it is much easier to handle the bulk of a full sized quilt on a frame.

I mainly use pantographs to do continuous line quilting but as I have been experimenting with free motion quilting as well.

With a frame you are still limited by the depth of the throat on your machine, most standard sewing machines will only allow you to do continuous line quilting patterns that are less than 3 inches wide, which means that you will be doing a lot of rows to finish a large quilt. But it is so much easier than using a standard sewing set up!

Easy Baby Quilt Patterns
When I was just learning how to quilt I practiced on easy baby quilt patterns so that I could hone my new skills without spending too much money.

Easy Quilt Pattern
If you are looking for an easy quilt pattern, there are a few things that you might want to avoid. Like triangles, sewing on the diagonal can be tricky as if you are not careful, the diagonal edge of your pattern piece can stretch during sewing making it more difficult to match your seams. It can also mean that your completed quilt top will not lay flat when you are trying to put your quilt sandwich together.

Easy ABC Baby Quilt Pattern
Although this easy ABC baby quilt was designed especially with beginners in mind, the finished product is stunning.

Making a strip quilt is reasonably quick and easy so they are perfect for beginners. This particular quilt design is especially easy as you do not even need to match your seams!

Quilting Frames
Quilting frames can make the process of quilting so much easier, the frame takes the bulk of your quilt so you don't have to constantly manipulate the quilt under the sewing foot and the result is so much tidier than trying to quilt using your normal sewing machine setup.

Baby Rail Fence Quilt
This Baby Rail Fence Quilt is 36.5 inches wide by 48.5 inches high. The quilt is reasonably easy to make and very suitable for beginners.

Nine Block Baby Quilt
This nine block baby quilt is made by alternating nine patch blocks and squares of fabric the same size as the blocks. The quilt has a medallion ring of blocks the same size as the blocks in the nine patch square.

Nine Patch Sash Quilt
The Nine Patch Sash Quilt is 36 7/16 inches wide and 49 3/16 inches high and uses a nine patch sashing to separate large diagonal print blocks.

Brown Tones Strip Quilt
My Brown Tones Strip Quilt was made to fit a queen sized bed and at 90 inches wide and 108 inches long it is slightly longer than you would normally expect, as I wanted to be able to tuck the quilt slightly under the pillows on the bed.

Button SB Quilt
My Button SB Quilt is 56 15/16 inches wide and 73 15/16 inches high. The blocks are set diagonally, with blocks in each corner.

Train Quilt
